Mike Trout

After attending Canoe U, Ensign Mike Trout, United States Navy, entered Navy preflight training at Pensacola. A year and a half-later Mike won his Naval Aviator wings-of-gold and chose to fly Attack Aviation. He reported next to the VA-125 Rough Raiders Replacement Air Group (RAG) to learn to fly the A-4 Skyhawk.

In the fleet Mike flew the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk in Attack Squadrons such as the VA-195 Dam Busters and VA-93 Blue Blazers. As a Blue Blazer, Mike made two combat tours to Vietnam flying hundreds of combat missions over North and South Vietnam. In all Mike went down to the sea four times.
The 11-21-59 to 05-14-60 CVG-19 tour to West-Pac was on USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 where Mike had 122 A-4B traps.
The 04-26-61 to 12-13-61 CVG-19 tour to West-Pac was on USS Hancock CV 19 where Mike had 47 A-4C traps.
The 01-05-67 to 07-22-67 CVW-5 combat tour was on USS Hancock CV 19 where Mike had 89 A-4E traps.
The 01-27-68 to 10-10-68 CVW-5 combat tour was from USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 where Mike made 270 A-4F landings.
Early in 1974, Mike was assigned to VA-45 as Executive Officer. Cdr. Trout was XO for two years, being extended to allow returning Prisoner of War, Commander Leonard Hyatt, to re-enter a normal career pattern as the Blackbird Commanding Officer.
In May 1976, Cdr. Michael D. Trout United States Navy became the twentieth VA-45 Blackbird Commanding Officer.
On July 1, 1976, Commander, Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet charged Mike to develop and provide an Air Combat Maneuvering program for the Atlantic Fleet. This challenge was Mike's meat! Admiral J. L. Holloway III, the Chief of Naval Operations, recognized this when he awarded VA-45 the 1977 Naval Aviation Safety award and Plaque for the most outstanding safety record achieved among special mission squadrons in the United States Atlantic Fleet.
Mike Trout CenturionAt the end of his career, Mike had 548 Traps recorded, with 243 of them at the end of a combat sortie. His totals included, 186 Traps in the "Foxtrot", 392 aboard CVA-31, and 135 aboard CVA-19. Mike Trout was a Centurion with the VA-93 Blue Blazers >>>>.
In 1998, Mike emailed the Skyhawk Association Webmaster to offer information about the squadrons in which he flew. Soon Mike was in charge of gathering, organizing and presenting Skyhawk statistics. Later Mike took the task of recruiting and organizing Squadron Duty Officers (SDOs) for each of the hundreds of squadrons that flew the Skyhawk.
Little did correspondents know that Mike had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). When Mike first contacted the SA Webmaster in June 1998 he did not expect to last until Christmas. Mike was all but paralyzed, confined to bed and waiting to die. Mike used a voice-operated computer to communicate on the Internet. In that condition he organized Skyhawk Website statistics and started communicating with people - soon he wanted to recruit and organize the Squadron Duty Officers. Doctors were perplexed why Mike didn't die - but here is a guy that flat on his back, in pain and paralyzed still found a way to make himself useful and meaningful - right up to five days before he died. What balls!!! Mike Trout is an example for all of us.
Sunday, October 21, 2001, Mike Trout was bingoed to the USS Great Beyond Ready Room. There he is playing Acey-Duecy with Wade McClusky. Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams are offering sage advice. Lounging around the room in small groups are the guys: Boisterously discussing tactics are Chennault, Nimitz, Boelka, Thatch, Caesar, Bong, Richthoffen, Bader, and Patton.
Pancho Barnes, Estocin, Springs, Doolittle, Shea, Blackburn, Fonck, McCudden, Shepard and Halsey are playing poker.
A bunch of guys are gathered at the bar tended by Lady Jessie. The Duke, Boyington, O'Hare, Perry, McConnell, Bong, Voss and Scott are drinking flaming hookers while others are clustered about a piano singing lusty songs.
Smiling Mike Trout behind the BlackBird

On the patio they are servicing the Dilbert Dunker for the follies soon to follow. Cdr. Michael D. Trout United States Navy is not alone - he is with the guys and we should be happy.

Patches

On August 10, 1945, VT-75's Fish-Hawk patch was approved. When VT-75 was re-designated VA-4B the new squadron did not request another patch.

On April 15, 1949, after VA-4B had been re-designated VA-45, the carrier air group assigned a chess piece to each air group squadron. A king chess piece was for the air group, the knight chess piece was for attack squadrons and the pawn was for fighter squadrons. This became the basis of VA-45's new black chess knight patch.

On April 10, 1951, the re-established VA-45 adopted the Blackbird patch. The poised and cocky Blackbird regally attired in tails, sports a green derby and boxing gloves that represent the squadron's potential punch. The Blackbird was selected because of its recognized persistence and vigorous nature in attacking and outwitting its enemies and displays and ever-ready and aggressive gleam in his eye. The green derby, cocked at a pugnacious angle, signifies the original squadron colors as a part of Air Group FOUR aboard United States Ship Intrepid. The "Four and Twenty" recalls the original four regular and 20 reserve pilots attached to the squadron, while the shredded and smoking cigar indicates that most of the pilots were older and more experienced than the average ones who usually comprise such a squadron. The addition of spats symbolizes the elegance of dress and manners of the Blackbirds of VA-45.

Date unknown but was being used in 1972 and 1973 - unofficial VA-45 Det 1 Skyhawks patch.

1979: As described in Naval Aviation News.
Home-based at NAS Cecil Field, Fla., and led by Cdr. G. R.Hertzler, Attack Squadron 45's primary mission is instrument training in TA-4Js. Attached to Light Attack Wing One, it also provides adversary training for the fleet. The squadron traces its lineage to VT-75 and VA-4B which flew Avengers, Helldivers and Skyraiders.

The insignia's poised and cocky black-bird, regally attired in tails, sports a derby and boxing gloves which represent the squadron's tactical punch. The blackbird was selected for its vigorous nature in attacking and outwitting its enemies. The green derby signifies the original squadron colors as part of Air Group Four aboard Intrepid. The original four regular and 20 reserve pilots attached to the squadron are recalled by the 4 and 20. The shredded and smoldering cigar denotes that most of the pilots were older and more experienced than in many other squadrons. The addition of the spats sums up the total picture.

Late 1984 or early 85, the newly established VF-45 adopted the Four and Twenty Blackbird patch from the earlier VA-45 squadron. The white star was changed to red for the adversary mission and a scroll with squadron's name added to the bottom.

Events

June 1, 1945: Torpedo Squadron Seventy-Five (VT-75) was established at NAAS Chincoteague, its first assigned aircraft was the Curtiss SBF-4E Helldiver, which was built under license in Canada.

January through February 1946: VT-75 Fish Hawks deployed aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB 42 for her shakedown cruise to the Caribbean and Brazil. While visiting Rio de Janeiro the squadron, air group, and carrier represented the United States of America at the inauguration of Brazilian president, Eurico G. Dutra.

March 20, 1946: VT-75 was based at NAS Norfolk, Virginia.

November 15, 1946: VT-75 was redesignated Attack Squadron FOUR B (VA-4B). VA-4B kept the Fish Hawk moniker.

March 27, 1947: Attack Squadron FOUR B Fish Hawks received the AD-1 Douglas Skyraider.

September 1, 1948: VA-4B was redesignated Attack Squadron FORTY-FIVE (VA-45). VA-45 kept the Fish Hawk moniker.

February 14, 1949: Attack Squadron FORTY-FIVE was based at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. VA-45 was assigned the AM-1 Martin Mauler.

October 20, 1949: Attack Squadron FORTY-FIVE was assigned the AD-4 Douglas Skyraider.

June 8, 1950: VA-45 Fish Hawks were disestablished.

September 1, 1950: Re-established as Attack Squadron FORTY-FIVE at NAAS Cecil Field, Florida. VA-45 was assigned the AD-1 Douglas Skyraider. The re-established VA-45 took the Blackbirds moniker.

October 12, 1952: VA-45 moved to NAS Jacksonville, Florida.

April 26 to December 4, 1953: Attack Squadron FORTY-FIVE Blackbirds operating the AD-4 Douglas Skyraider. with CVG-4 embarked at Mayport, Florida on USS Lake Champlain CVA-39 for combat in Korea.

January 1, 1954: The origin of the "Blackbird" insignia. Naval Aviation News February 1954

Take one part blackbird, stir in Champlain's aviation gas, add an old pair of boxing gloves and a shredded cigar for flavoring, mix with a 1000-lb bomb, four and 20 times, serve same in a green derby-and you have Navy Attack Squadron 45, the "Blackbids".
In its third extended tour since leaving Jacksonville, Fla., September 1950, the squadron has carried its odd insignia, a cockv blackbird dressed elegantly in a green derby, boxing gloves and a cigar-from one end of the world to the other. It has also managed to unleash half the tonnage of bombs dropped by the carrier USS Lake Champlain's attack force in the closing days of the Korean conflict.
"When we first landed on board the Lake Champlain," said Lt(jg) George Kinnear, one of the insignia designers, "there wasn't a man on the flight deck who didn't get a chuckle out of my unique appearance." Kinnear reported aboard with his crash helmet topped by a brilliant green derby!
Originally called the "Black Knights" before the squadron was recommissioned, VA-45 decided it needed a snappier insignia. By April, 1951, after one ocean voyage into the Mediterranean aboard the carrier USS Oriskany, the squadron had its new insignia with an impressive meaning and history behind each symbol. "Our blackbird didn't fall together by accident," explained LCDR Richard Mills, skipper of the squadron. "Both the blackbird and his dress all have special significance."
The blackbird was chosen because of its recognized persistence and aggressive nature in attacking and outwitting its enemies. The green derby signifies the color assigned to the fifth (for attack) squadron of a carrier air group. The squadron is part of Air Group Four aboard the Lake Champlain. The boxing gloves were selected to represent the potential "punch" of the Navy's Skyraider, the only type of plane flown by the squadron. "Four and Twenty" on the insignia represents the original 24 pilots who were assigned to the squadron. The cigar was added to show that most of the pilots were older and more experienced than the average pilots comprising such a squadron.

"By popular vote, the blackbird was selected over two others," said Kinnear. "Boxing gloves were suggested by an enlisted man, Charles G. Mitchell, personnel-man third class. My contribution was the green derby. "I picked it up one night as I was returning to the ship from a party in Genoa, Italy. I was riding in a horse-drawn cab and got the crazy idea to ask the driver if I could drive the cab. He agreed, and the minute I perched the bowler on top my head, I wanted it for my own. "After some haggling, the driver finally agreed to let me have it for 700 lira, slightly more than a dollar."
Kinnear took the derby back to his squadron mates who promptly classified it "top secret" until it had been painted and sewn to a helmet. The squadron decided that the actual helmet with derby attached would be worn only when the pilots reported to or were detached from duty aboard one of the carriers.
Three months later the outside world received its first glimpse of the new addition as the squadron prepared to leave the Oriskany for Jacksonville. When the derby-topped helmet popped into view as Kinnear boarded his plane, the surprised ship's band quickly swung into the tune "Bye, Bye, Blackbirds."
The present crop of Blackbirds readily admit that none of them have derbys at home, but 22 out of 23 still smoke cigars. "Sometimes our ready room looks like the inside of a cloud bank," said Lt. Robert J. McAllister, "with everyone smoking up a storm."
Following its first tenure of duty aboard the USS Oriskany, the Blackbirds put in a stint aboard the giant carrier USS Coral Sea, April to October, 1952, their second trip to the Mediterranean. Highlight of this tour was participation in an aviation show for Tito of Yugoslavia.
Right now the squadron roosts aboard the Lake Champlain. It was while flying from this carrier in the latter days of the war that the Blackbird squadron lost its first and only pilot, Lt(jg) Donald Brewer. The VA-45 veteran was shot down west of the Punchbowl by 37 mm. Flak. Skipper Mills attributes the "Backbirds'" low fatality and accident rate to its excellent hangar deck crew.
At the sign of the green hat and to the air of "Bye, Bye, Blackbirds,"; VA-45 flies by, a proud part of the Navy's flying might.

Off-Duty Photos

From former VA-45 Commanding Officer A.H. "Joker One" Hinman (May 3, 2001): "I was in VA-34 as X.O and they decommissioned out from under me till they could start up as an A-6 squadron. So they sent me over to VA-45 as C.O. from June of 1969 till June of 1970. I had Alfred Hector "Speedy" Gonzalez as my X.O. He was so mean that even I was afraid of him. Cliff Ruthrauff was the admin. boss and did all the work. A former C.O., one Radm. L. Heyworth was "ComFairJax"; so we painted up one of our birds as triple zeros to get him around in style. We shared the "E" with somebody else that year, but they didn't have nearly as much fun as we did. We just had a reunion in Pensacola last year (2001), the C.O. twice removed from me (Pagonelli), did a great job putting it together. One of my Ensigns, Katy Dugan, was there and she still looked 25. The rest of us old farts, well looked like old farts. Year 2001 was a great year."
