Heritage-Patches

In 1941 when the U.S. entered World War II, Point Mugu became a training area for the Seabees at Port Hueneme. The Seabees put down a section of the Marston Mat runway that became Point Mugu’s first airstrip. A Naval Air Facility was established to test and evaluate the Loon surface-to-surface missile, followed by other missile programs. In 1946 it became Naval Air Missile Test Center at Point Mugu, then in 1949 the Naval Air Station Point Mugu was founded to provide support for the Missile Test Center. After the Army transferred more than 19,000 acres of South Camp Cooke to the Navy in 1958, the Pacific Missile Range was formed with headquarters at Point Mugu. Despite the name changes of the station, Point Mugu’s quality of testing and evaluation has been instrumental in the development of numerous missiles including the Sparrow, Polaris, Trident, Harpoon, Tomahawk, SLAM and Sidewinder. On Jan. 22, 1992, the Naval Air Station was re-established as the Naval Air Weapons Station./

Events

Naval Weapons Test Squadron Point Mugu was established in May 1995 after being established in October 1994 as a result of the Naval Air Warfare Center competency realignment. The squadron is the principal Naval flight and ground test support activity for all Point Mugu sited Naval Air Systems Command aircraft and aircraft functions, including logistics and training support. The squadron is ideally located near the largest sea test range in the world, and only minutes away by aircraft from extensive Edwards and China Lake overland test range complexes. Squadron assets routinely deploy world wide to meet unique weapons testing needs at remote ranges and to provide fleet support.

Squadron aircraft include the NF-14A/B/D, QF-4N/S, NP-3D, DC-130A, and the SA227 Metroliner. F-14 Tomcats are utilized in the development testing of new weapons and hardware, as well as software and mission planning systems. QF-4 Phantoms can be conventionally piloted as test platforms or flown via remote control as unmanned aerial targets. P-3 Orion aircraft provide the capability to track targets in support of various missions through use of an extensive suite of sophisticated telemetry, radar, and optical systems, in addition to providing support missions for the Fleet. The DC-130 Hercules provides the capability to launch sub scale aerial targets, as well as airborne logistics support. Metroliners provide key round trip passenger service to China Lake on a daily basis, and to other locales as required.

9 June, 1963: President Kennedy visiting Point Mugu Naval Air and Missile test base.

President Kennedy flashes his famous smile as he bids goodbye to the crowd who turned out to see him during his brief stopover at Point Mugu during his half-hour stay at the Point Mugu, Missile complex. President Kennedy went to the podium and gave a short speech. "We did not come here from Washington, D.C., to encourage the military forces, but rather to see the military forces encourage ourselves". "We have seen, for the past 24 hours, seeing the military forces of the United States here on the West coast". I go back to Washington with the feeling of renewed pride in being an American and renewed confidence in being a citizen of the greatest republic on earth". The 60,000 persons who visited here that day and heard him speak those words could well paraphrase him; "We did not come to encourage the President, but to be encouraged by him". Indeed it must seem ironic that on that day the weather was dull, overcast, dark (President Kennedy laughed," I had heard of the California sunshine, and I believe sometime today I am going to see it"). He then laughed about the absence of the sunshine and concluded "I want to express our thanks to all of you for coming out here and giving us a warm hello". The mood was festive, happy perhaps even joyous. The President left the speakers podium and in his typical fashion, mingled with the crowd shaking countless hands. He was finally ushered to the Presidential plane, from where he gave a farewell wave to 60,000 persons who were seeing him for the last time. Official United States Navy photograph, G.
