Pre-1965 Flight Classification Code

Format = [Condition][Purpose][Type]

Condition of Flight:
1 = Daylight Visual
2 = Daylight Instrument
3 = Night Visual
4 = Night Instrument

Purpose of Flight:
A = Fleet, FMF, or Reserv Unit Syllavbus Training, or Tactical Exercises.
B = Individual non-syllabus Training, or Maintenance of Flight Proficiency.
C = Proficiency combined with either Administrative or Transport Flight.
D = New Pilot Syllabus Training.
E = Refresher Syllabus Training.
F = Syllabus Training of Flight Instructors.
G = Other Student Syllabus Training.
H = Training and familiarizton of USAF, USCG, and U.S. Army Pilots or Students.
I = Foreign Student Training.
J = Ferry.
K = Experiment, Development, Evaluation.
L = Flight Check or Test (non-experimental).
M = Utility Support of Other Aircraft or Aviation Ground Units.
N = Utility Support of Ships or Ground Force Units.
P = Rescue, Survivor Search (inc. Combat Rescue) Q = Miscellaneous Non-Training Flights.
R = Transport or Administrative.
S = Attack, ASC Designated Target.
T = Attack, Other Targets (excl. sub or aircraft).
U = Counter-Air Force Offensive.
V = Reconnaissance (excl. anti-submarine, armed recon - T).
W = Air Defense of Own Base.
X = Defense of Other Forces or Bases.
Y = Offensive Anti-Submarine.
Z = Defensive Anti Submarine.

Type of Flight:
Used for Purpose A - I:
1 = Fundamentals.
2 = Instrument or All Weather.
3 = Field Carrier landing Practice.
4 = Carrier Qualification.
5 = Transition.
6 = Intercept, Fighter Escort, Air to Air Gunnery.
7 = Attack.
8 = Anti-Submarine.
9 = Special Type Training.
0 = Other.
Used for Purpose Q:
1 = Aerologigcal.
2 = Noncombat Patrol or Search.
3 = Noncombat Photography or Radar Mapping.
4 = Airshows, Demonstrations.
5 = Noncombat, nontraining, not elsewhere specified.
Use for Purpose R:
1 = Scheduled Logistic Transport.
2 = Nonscheduled Logistic Trasnport.
3 = Evacution or Other Transport of Hospital Patients.
4 = Transport of Passengers for Administrative Purposes.
7 = Troop Support, Liaison.
Used for Purpose S:
1 = Targets assigned before takeoff.
2 = Targets assigned after takeoff.
9 = Escort or cover for above.
Used for Purpose T:
1 = Surface target, preassigned. (exc. sub or aircraft).
2 = Surface target of opportunity, armed recon. (exc. sub or aircraft).
6 = Minelaying, all types.
9 = Escort or cover for above.
Used for Purpose U:
1 = Figher Sweeps, intruder missions, night airfield heckling.
2 = CAP over enemy airfields or other targets.
3 = Offensive diversion and deception.
8 = Escort or cover of Air Force Bombers.
9 = Escort or cover of Transport Planes.
Used for Purpose V: (exc. ASW, armed recon - T2)
1 = Photographic reconnaissance.
2 = Radar and RCM recon, radar mapping, etc.
3 = Gunfire Spotting, Air Support Controller, other visual.
9 = Escort or cover of reconnaissance planes.
Used for Purpose W: (Air Defense, Own Base)
1 = AEW or airborne CIC, and its escort or cover.
2 = Combat Air Patrol, local or advanced.
7 = Intercept (scramble).
Used for Purpose X: (Defense of other forces or bases).
1 = AEW or Airborne CIC, and its escort or cover.
2 = Special CAP to protect radar picket vessel.
3 = Spcial CAp to protect rescue vessel or plane.
4 = CAP over other friendly surface forces or bases.
7 = Intercept (scramble).
Used for Purpose Y:
1 = Routine sector or area search (excl. hunter-killer).
2 = Barrier search.
3 = Offensive hunter-killer search.
4 = Holdown of located submarine.
5 = Attack on located submarine.
Used for Purpose Z:
1 = Protect own CTF underway (ship-based planes).
2 = Escort vessels not own CTF (ship or land-based planes).
3 = Defensive partol of harbor or other limited area.

US Naval Aircraft Action Codes
 
CHANGES IN CUSTODY
 
A - Acceptance. Use only to report the acceptance into the  
    inventory of new production aircraft.
    Normally used only by NAVAIR Fleet Support (FS) activities
 
F - Receipt at the End of Operating Service Period. Used only  
    by NAVAIR FS activities to report receipt of aircraft  
    returned for standard rework (SDLM), storage, or retirement
    at the end of an operating service period.
 
G - Receipt at the Start of an Operating Service Period. Used  
    by reporting custodians to report receipt of an aircraft
    that is beginning (not resuming) an operating service  
    period; for example, an aircraft returning from standard  
    rework.
 
R - Receipt of an aircraft that is neither beginning nor ending
    a service period. Use to report an aircraft that has  
    accumulated time in a current service period.
 
Y - Reinstatement. Used to report the reinstatement of a  
    previously stricken aircraft or the addition of a used  
    aircraft to the naval inventory.
 
CHANGES IN STATUS
 
E - End of an Operating Period. Used by reporting custodians of  
    all controlling custodians to report termination of an
    aircraft's operating service period. Reports that the  
    aircraft is en route to or in physical custody of a rework  
    facility. No change in custody is involved.
 
H - Start of a Operating Service Period. Used by reporting  
    custodian to report an aircraft that has completed SDLM and
    is beginning an operating service period. No change of  
    custody is involved.
 
L - Change of Location.
 
M - Model Designation Change. Used to report model designation  
    changes or conversions by a depot-level maintenance activity.
 
S - Strike. Used to report the strike of an aircraft (Status code
    1S0, 2S0, 3S0, or 4S0).
 
X - Other change. Use action "X" when no other Action code would
    be appropriate

Note: E-1 - Status code may only be used when immediate period  
            termination is recommended on ASPA non-deferred aircraft
            or ASPA non-deferred aircraft is over 90 days beyond PED.
            ACC approval is required to place aircraft in "E" code
