Events 01 JUL 1965: VU-1 redesignated VC-1 and given tail code "UA" VC-1 provides towed targets, acts as interceptors for Hawaiian Air National Guard exercises, provides photo capabilities and aerial refueling. June 9, 1967: Lt. Robert Polich, 27, escaped injury when his A4B Skyhawk (BuNo 142134) sustained major damage when it apparently lost it brakes and smashed into the brush at the Diamond Head end of the Barbers Point runway yesterday afternoon. An external fuel tank which dropped off ignited, but was quickly extinguished by the crash crew. Honolulu Star Bulletin, Saturday, 10 June 1967. BuNo 142134 went from VC-1 to NARF Alameda 07 August 1967 and was SOC (1S) due to damage at NARF Alameda 13 August 1969. October 19, 1967: Lt. William C. Barnich, 29, ejected (BuNo 144876) while on a routine training mission at 5,000 feet 32 miles west of Oahu and was rescued by helicopter after his engine flamed out at 14,000 feet. Robert Jensen was killed when his A-4E (BuNo 151112) crashed into the Pacific Ocean during a night GCA approach to NAS Barbers Point during bad weather. From William Stevens. Lt(jg). Robert L. Jensen, 29, was killed when his A-4 Skyhawk crashed into the Ocean as he was returning to NAS Barbers Point at about 8 p.m. Tuesday after an inflight night refueling exercise. Eleven aircraft and the USCG cutter Newagen covered more than 1,500 square miles of ocean NNW of Oahu during the three day search which was called off at 4 p.m. yesterday. Yesterday morning a helicopter followed the oceans currents from the point the pilot was last heard from 15 miles south of Oahu. No sign of Jensen or his plane were spotted. The Honolulu Advertiser, Friday, 12 November 1971. Lt. Robert L. Jensen, was killed when his A-4 Skyhawk apparently crashed into the Ocean 15 miles south of NAS Barbers Point Tuesday evening. Radar contact and radio communications were lost at 8.p.m. as he was coming in on a normal landing approach. A total of 11 Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marine Corps aircraft and a Coast Guard Cutter searched 1,560 square mile area for the pilot. Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Friday, November 12, 1971. June 2, 1975: Lt. Michael "Zurf" Zurfluh was killed in an A-4 (BuNo 153473) operational accident. From William Stevens. Unknown pilot is still missing after his NAS Barbers Point VC-1 TA-4J Skyhawk crashed into the sea while on a routine maintenance check flight. The crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. yesterday 41 nautical miles W of Honolulu and USCG searchers found neither the plane nor the pilot and there was no radio call prior to the crash. Honolulu Star Advertiser, Tuesday, 03 June 1975. April 11, 1983: LCdr. Gary J. Hagstrom, 38, and Lt. Walter Joe Richardson, 26, ejected safely into 15-foot swells 700 miles ENE of Oahu, HI Monday after their A-4 Skyhawk (BuNo 153661) caught fire. LCdr. Hagstrom stayed in his one man life raft for 18 hours before being picked up by the Matson cargo container ship Lurline. Two USAF rescue specialists parachuted into the water to assist Hagstrom and another Navy flier. SSgt. Jeffrey Y. Jones, 26, was seen unconscious in the water after the rescue attempt Monday afternoon and has not been spotted since.
