Events Jul. 1970: The squadron stood up at NAS Los Alamitos, CA, as VA-305, with Douglas A-4C Skyhawk aircraft, assigned to CVWR-30. Date unknown: VA-305 moved to NAS Point Mugu with A-4C's, thereafter getting A-4E's. 1972: VA-305 was assigned A-7A's Corsair IIs. 1987: VA-305 was disestablished 1987: The unit was reestablished as VFA-305 and assigned F/A-18 Hornets, assigned to CVWR-30. 1990: VFA-305 was switched to CVW-11 to ride the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln ( CVN-72) in a Port change / Maiden Voyage, from NAS Norfolk, VA to NAS Alameda, CA, around the Horn of South America. At the end of that function they returned to CVWR-30 at NAS Point Mugu, CA. Shortly thereafter they became an Aggressor squadron. December 1994: VFA-305 was dis-established after 24 years of service. The entire air-wing of CVWR-30 dis-established as well. |
Unit Photos Webmaster note: Prior to 1970, reserve aircraft belonged to the local NARTU or Reserve Naval Air Station. Except for those squadrons on active duty, as in Korea, no reserve squadron "owned" their aircraft, as they were assigned to the NARTU/Station. In 1970, during that reorganization of the reserves into the "Reserve Force" concept, each new squadron was made independent of NARTU (later called NAR), and assigned either to CVWR-20 or CVWR-30. All squadrons were then made in the image of active duty units, with the reserve unit Commanding Officer owning the aircraft and reporting to the CAG.
