In 1965, United States Intelligence indicated that bombing bridges over major rivers in North Vietnam would significantly affect the North Vietnamese war on South Vietnam. North Vietnamese Bridges then became primary targets for United States Navy strikes in the North. VA-144 was assigned a bridge bombing mission on December 1, 1965. Later that day Mac launched in his A-4C Skyhawk BuNo. 149560, side number NF 547, from USS Ticonderoga CVA 14 on a mission to drop a bridge span deep in North Vietnam. Mac's A-4C was loaded with a single 500 pound bomb on the center station to increase the Scooter's combat performance. Just after rolling in on his bomb run Mac and his Scooter took a direct hit from North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire. The Scooter exploded and LT(jg) John V. "Mac" McCormick, United States Navy was Killed-In-Action. Gone. A fine officer, top-notch pilot and dedicated American was gone in a flash! Mac McCormick left grief stricken family, shipmates and friends.

February 1959 - When VA-116 was redesignated VA-144 it continued using the Electron Lightning Bolt patch - modifying only the banner designation.

1964 - Road Runner pilots were wearing an unofficial Scooter patch on their flight jackets.

Events

December 1, 1955: Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN (VA-116) established at Naval Air Station Miramar, near San Diego, California. VA-116 was assigned the Vought F7U-3M (Gutless) Cutlass.

September 1957: VA-116 embarked in USS Hancock (CVA 19), was stationed off the coast of Taiwan due to a build-up of Chinese Communist forces on the mainland opposite Taiwan.

October 15, 1957: VA-116 was assigned the North American FJ-4B Fury.

May 26 through August 18, 1958: VA-116 was embarked in USS Ranger (CVA 61) during its transit from the east coast, via South America, to Ranger's new Naval Air Station Alameda home port.

February 23, 1959: VA-116 was re-designated Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED FORTY FOUR (VA-144).

July 1959: The VA-144 Road Runners, embarked in USS Ranger (CVA 61), maintained station off the coast of Taiwan due to increased tension between Taiwan and Communist China.

May 1962
VA-144 home-port was changed to Naval Air Station Lemoore, California.

June 4, 1962: VA-144 is assigned the Douglas A4D-2N (A-4C) Skyhawk.

May 5, 1964, to February 1, 1965: VA-144 Road Runners flying the A-4C Skyhawk with CVW-14 embarked on USS Constellation CVA 64 for the first of six Vietnam combat cruises.

June through November 1964: VA-144 Road Runners participated in Yankee Team Operations. These operations involved support for photo reconnaissance missions over Laos. During these operations, the squadron was the first operational unit to fly with and drop the Snakeye weapon.

August 4, 1964: VA-144 flew night sorties in support of the American destroyers, Turner Joy (DD 951) and Maddox (DD 731), following their harassment by North Vietnamese Motor Torpedo Boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.

August 5, 1964: VA-144 participated in Operation Pierce Arrow, air strikes against North Vietnamese torpedo boats, their bases and supporting facilities in retaliation for the attacks on the American destroyers the previous day. Strikes were flown against the North Vietnamese homeport of Hon Gay and the naval craft located there. During this engagement LT.(jg) Everett Alvarez's A-4C Skyhawk BuNo. 149578, side number NK 411, was hit by antiaircraft fire and Lt. Alvarez was forced to eject. A rescue attempt failed, and the North Vietnamese captured him. Lieutenant Alvarez became the first American naval prisoner-of-war of the Vietnam War and was held by the North Vietnamese until 1973.
During the first attack Constellation also lost VA-145 A-1H Skyraider BuNo. 139760, piloted by Lt.(jg) R. C. Sather, USN to AAA anti-aircraft fire. Lt. Sather was Killed-In-Action.

August 16, 1965: Cdr. Charles H. Peters, VA-144 XO from NAS Lemoore ejected safely and was rescued by the destroyer USS Wadsworth after 5 hours in the sea. His A4C (BuNo 149561) Skyhawk, operating from the USS Ticonderoga, crashed 66 miles south of San Diego Monday night. Reno Evening Gazette, Tuesday, August 17, 1965 and The Daily Review, Wednesday, August 18, 1965.

September 28, 1965, to May 13, 1966: The VA-144 Road Runners flying the A-4C Skyhawk with CVW-5 embarked on USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 for the Roadrunners second combat cruise to Vietnam.

December 1, 1965: Lt(jg) John Vern McCormick United States Navy, flying A-4C Skyhawk BuNo. 149560, side number NF 547, was shot down by AAA anti-aircraft fire over North Vietnam. Lieutenant McCormick was Killed-In-Action.
was killed when his aircraft (BuNo 149560, NF 547) exploded instantly after being hit by 57mm AAA during a raid on the Hai Duong Bridge near Tranh Hoa.

February 9, 1966: Cdr. Jack L. Snyder ejected and was rescued by a Navy SAR helicopter from the USS England after a SA-2 missile exploded near his Skyhawk (BuNo 149557, NF 546) at 500 feet and riddled it with shrapnel causing hydraulic failure and fire that caused the tail to break off seconds after he ejected.

February 14, 1966: Lt.(jg) J.C. Durham ejected and was rescued by a USMC helicopter 20 miles off the coast when the engine of A-4C Skyhawk BuNo 149552, NF 543, eventually failed after pulling off a target in southern Laos. From my book, 'Broken Arrow': On a Steel Tiger mission somewhere over Laos, Jere Durham of VA-144 was hit by ground fire. His A-4C’s engine temperature kept increasing but was still producing thrust. Durham attempted to land at Da Nang but was thwarted by worsening weather. He headed out to sea and ejected from Roadrunner 543 twenty miles off the coast where he was rescued by a Marine Corps helicopter without apparent injuries. Jim Winchester.

March 20, 1966: Lt(jg). Jerald Lee Pinneker (A-4C Skyhawk BuNo 145081, NF-553) was killed when after dropping napalm (2nd pass) on a VC troop concentration in the Mekong Delta he flew into several trees and his aircraft exploded.

November 5, 1966, to June 19, 1967: The VA-144 Road Runners flying the A-4C Skyhawk with CVW-11 embarked on USS Kitty Hawk CVA 63 for their third combat cruise to Vietnam.

December 21, 1966: Lt.(jg) Danny Elloy Glenn ejected and was captured after his Skyhawk was hit by AAA about 15 miles W of Mu Ron Ma while flying a armed reconnaissance mission. War Paint 303, an A-4C (BuNo 148507), LT(JG) Danny E. Glenn, VA-144, was shot down by AAA during an armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam, 18°9'N, 106°9'E. Glenn shouted "I'm hit!" over his radio, War Paint 316, another Skyhawk, transmitting "Eject, you're on fire." Glenn was captured and did not return home until 4 April 1973.

August 26, 1967: LCdr. Louis D. Keil, a member of VA-144, was killed last Saturday when his A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo 151081) crashed while on an operational training mission at Fallon, NV. Keil came to Lemoore from the Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey. The Hanford Sentinel, Thursday, August 31, 1967. - LCdr. Louis D. Keil, age 33, was killed in a plane crash at Fallon Air Base in NV around 8 o'clock Saturday morning. LCdr. Keil was a career officer and served as a pilot on the USS Kitty Hawk. He had just returned from Vietnam in June and was scheduled to return in the fall. He was on a special two-week training mission when his dive bomber crashed. The Mitchell Tribune, August 31, 1967.

November 18, 1967 to June 28, 1968: The VA-144 Road Runners flying the Douglas A-4E Skyhawk with CVW-11 embarked on USS Kitty Hawk CVA 63 for their fourth combat cruise to Vietnam.

November 22, 1967: LCdr. Virgil J. Lamaura, 30, was lost at sea Thur. when his A4 Skyhawk plunged into the ocean just after launch from the carrier Kitty Hawk operating 400 miles east of HI. Pacific Stars & Stripes, Monday, November 27, 1967. 0636 (hours) While launching aircraft an A-4 from VA-144, side number 306 Bureau# 151199 piloted by LCDR V.J. Lamaura flew into the water 2 miles off the port bow at position 24-28.5N 150-06.3W. 0645 USS Prichett (DD-561) searching for pilot. 0704 USS Prichett recovered 1 pilot logbook and wallet belonging to LCDR Lamaura. Pilot lost at sea. USS Kitty Hawk deck log, Wednesday, 22 November 1967.

December 20, 1967: Cdr. J. R. Powell, Jr. and Cdr. R. C. Bos were awarded the Silver Star for planning and leading a successful strike against the heavily defended Haiphong Thermal Power Plant (west).

January 5, 1968: Cdr. Robert James Schweitzer flying A-4E Skyhawk BuNo 152074, NH 304, was leading an Iron Hand mission against a SAM site just to the west of Haiphong and was hit by 37mm flak just as the last aircraft had dropped its bombs. His aircraft suffered complete electrical and hydraulic failure and he ejected close to Haiphong and was captured. War Paint 304, an A-4E (BuNo 152074), CDR Robert J. Schweitzer, VA-144, was shot down (probable AAA) while retiring from dive bombing a North Vietnamese SAM site, 20°49'N, 106°41'E. Schweitzer was taken by the enemy and did not return to the U.S. until 14 March 1973.

January 29, 1968: Lt(jg). J.D. Gingiss had a fire in the cockpit and ejected safely from VA-144 Nbr. 303 BuNo 151055 at 1301. 1320 pilot recovered by helo and returned to ship in good health. USS Kitty Hawk deck log, 29 January 1968.

March 13, 1968: Lt. R.E. Curtis ejected safely when his Skyhawk was hit by automatic weapons fire on his 3rd strafing run attacking a location on Route 9 about 20 miles west of Khe San. The engine began to vibrate as it lost power and he ejected a few miles south of the target and was rescued by USAF HH‑3E. War Paint 300, an A-4E (BuNo 152088), LT Robert E. Curtis, VA-144, was shot down by AW fire while strafing a "suspected storage area" approximately 20 miles west of Khe Sanh, subsequently escaping to eject over Laos, 16°29'N, 106°20'E. Evading the enemy for 30 minutes, LT Curtis was rescued by a USAF Jolly Green Giant and flown to Da Nang.

April 24, 1968: VA-144's aircraft participated in a strike against the Kep Airfield, the first time the airfield was hit during the air war over North Vietnam.

April 27, 1968: LCdr. Robert Saavedra was killed while strafing a number of trucks on a road 30 miles south of Vinh. Thirty seconds after rolling in his wingman saw a large fireball near the road and it could not be determined if LCdr. Saavedra had been shot down or flew into the ground. War Paint 303, an A-4E (BuNo 151070), LCDR Robert Saavedra, VA-144, was lost (unknown causes) during a night armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam, 18º10’N, 105º53’E. While approaching Route 151, LCDR Saavedra reported vehicular traffic and began “rolling-in” for an attack. At 0253, however, War Paint 310, another Skyhawk, observed a large explosion and fire at that position, the flames were visible through light ground fog for almost an hour.

March 7, 1969: LCdr. H. Ross Wees Jr., 34, was killed Friday when the A-4 Skyhawk (BuNo 152094) he was piloting collided with an A-7 Corsair (VA-122 BuNo 153476) over CA. He had been stationed at NAS Lemoore and had been recalled to active duty in December 1967. His body was found in the plane's wreckage near Huron, Calif. The other pilot reportedly parachuted to safety. Bedford Gazette, Bedford, PA., Tuesday, March 11, 1969.

March 18, 1969, to October 29, 1969: The Road Runners flying the Douglas A-4E Skyhawk with CVW-5 embarked on USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 for their fifth combat cruise to Vietnam.

June 22, 1969: Lt(jg). Leland Charles Cooke Sage led his wingman on a night Steel Tiger strike near Ban Soppeng, 15 miles west of Mu Gia Pass, under control of an FAC. He didn't drop any bombs on his 1st attempt and on his 2nd attempt rolled in from 11,000 feet and reported that he would egress to the left of the target. Two FAC's in the area saw him dive towards the target in a straight line until his Skyhawk (BuNo 152029, NF 503) exploded on the ground near the target. Although he may have been hit there was a strong possibility that he became preoccupied and flew into the ground.

August 10, 1969: Lt. William Emil Mickelson, Jr. was killed when his aircraft crashed into the fantail during his landing approach. The crash sprayed aircraft parts about the carrier's flight deck and fantail injuring several people. The belly fuel tank ruptured and ignited, but was brought under control by the shipboard damage control fire fighters. 2112 (hours) A-4E BuNo 151131, side No. 510 of VA-144, pilot William E. Michelson Jr., crashed into the fantail at longitude 107-22.8E, latitude 59N and apparently sank in 225 feet of water. Detailed the USS Gurke to search for the pilot. 2114 Fire on the flight deck, port side aft of fueling spaces fwd. of the LSO platform. 2116 Fire is out. 2203 Ceased operating aircraft. August 13, 1969: Lt. W. "Bill" H. Easterlin was rescued after VA-144 A-4E BuNo 152003 crashed into the sea off the starboard bow at latitude 18-00N longitude 107-17.8E and sank in 245 feet of water at 1932 hours. 1935 Pilot recovered by helicopter and returned on board this ship. Pilot was unharmed. USS Bon Homme Richard log book, 13 August 1969. The A-4E was launched on a bombing mission from the starboard catapult set for a gross weight of 23,000 pounds for an end speed of 141 knots. Witnesses noted a definite decrease in engine RPM as the A-4 proceeded down the catapult. Off the end with 14 knots excess end speed they also noted a possible over-rotation. The A-4E encountered immediate buffet and began to settle. Seven to ten seconds later, as the stricken A-4E reached 20 feet above the water, the pilot initiated ejection on the air boss' call. April 2, 1970 to November 12, 1970: The VA-144 Road Runners flying the Douglas A-4F Skyhawk with CVW-5 embarked on USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31 for their sixth combat cruise to Vietnam.

June 7, 1970: Lt. Jim Speed VA-144 No. 514 A-4F Skyhawk BuNo. 154215 reported in the water at 1200 hours. Detached Helo and the Small (DD-838) to investigate area bearing 170 deg. CT, 25 miles. At 1214 pilot was on board helo. 1253 The Small reported recovering pilots life raft. No other debris located. USS Bon Homme Richard deck log, Sunday, 7 June, 1970

When Kitty Hawk departed April 8, 1968, for the Tonkin Gulf, the VA-144 Skyhawks flew out and trapped aboard enroute to Yankee Station.
