Events

WWII Era: RVC Johnson of 75 Squadron: "Dear Friends.... today I was given a box of medallions etc. relating to my Father, Ralph Valentine (Val) Clingan Johnson who was a sergeant and later WO in 75 RAF(NZ) squadron. In the box was his gold Caterpillar Club pin. Also an arm patch and pictures of him in his uniform. His sister recently died and my daughter literally put out a bon-fire to retrieve a mass of papers and photos being burnt as the rubbish of an old lady. My ex-wife is visiting me a brought a package enclosing these bits and bobs. I am enclosing various details which might be of interest to your Association. A few Newspaper cuttings. One shows him with his crew after returning from the first raid on Berlin. All the rest of the crew were killed. Another tells of his glee at watching his bombs fall.My Father was a qualified navigator in the merchant navy and transferred to Bomber Command. He was classed as a navigator/ bomb-aimer but in another report (of his escape) he is referred to as co-pilot. It mentions how many sorties he finished.
He was born on Valentine's Day, 1915 and he died in 1961 aged just 46. I have surmised his war experiences did not help his health. He had fabulous handwriting of which he was very proud. I know this will also make some proud in your group.
Best wishes from his son, Ralph Johnson, Mianyang, Sichuan, China.

23/24 AUG 1943: Ralph Valentine (Val) Clingan Johnson, a sergeant, and later WO in 75 RAF(NZ) squadron and his crew after returning from the first raid on Berlin.
Squadron's first bombing of Berlin Newspaper article.
All the rest of the crew were later killed in the war.

16 JUN 1988: Two photos of unknown RNZAF A-4K Skyhawk after it ...... tried to takeoff with the parking brake on, got up to 80 knots. Note: RNZAF A-4 pilots usually did the 85% manual fuel check with the park brake on. They released brakes to commence T/O roll by flicking park brake switch off and going to MIL power. Incidentally there was a red BRAKE warning light on the glare shield which was on whenever the park brake was on, so he missed that in his T/O roll checks as well (one of the checks is "check all warning lights off"). ......... A lack of currency was a major contributing factor, as was the position of the sun which was directly in ... the pilots eyes.
Both wheels were locked, but only this one burst. The other one must have rotated a bit I think. He had a centre line 400gal drop tank on which would have probably been full (2600lbs). It must have had very slow acceleration which should have been a warning sign. Pic 1 Pic 2 From Don Simms via Phil Thompson.
